In keeping with a country with a strong fishing tradition, carp is the chosen dish for Christmas day. They are raised in giant lakes and ponds that provide fine shooting for duck in the winter. In summer the fishing is excellent on the many rivers that lace the countryside: in the south the Vltava and Vydra fish well in spring once the melt has ended. The river edges teem with wildlife that include black storks and otters.
